On March 2, 2010, representatives from Global Network of Women's Shelters presented on the important work of women's shelters in New York City, USA at the 54th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. GNWS discussed the important work of women's shelter networks and shelters including refuges, women centers, transition homes and other safe spaces and their roles in ending violence against women and their children.

Prior to the UN meeting, the founding members of GNWS met in February 2010 in New York City, USA to discuss crucial issues impacting victims and to formally adopt the GNWS's Vision, Purpose, Guiding Principles, Core Values, Goals and Interim Governing Board.
